The reactor commons trains its next maintainers before the old hands age out

Forty apprentices enter a program that will not be shortened, at a place where the skill that keeps the lights on takes a decade to earn.

The reactor commons does not hurry, and neither does the room where it teaches its own. Forty apprentices filed in on the first morning of the new cohort, most of them young enough to have grown up assuming the power simply arrived, and the first thing anyone told them was that they would not be certified for ten years. Not slowed by malice. Not slowed by scarcity. Slowed on purpose, by a program that has decided the schedule is itself the lesson.

"You cannot compress a thing whose whole point is that it does not fail," said Amara, the lead engineer who oversees the training floor, a woman who has spent longer inside the reactor halls than most of her students have been alive. She said it without heat, the way she says most things, and then she said it again in a different way, because she has learned that people hear the schedule as a delay rather than as the discipline itself. "The tolerances are not hard to explain. Living inside them until they become instinct — that is the ten years."

What cannot be crashed

Other yards are trying the crash-certification model, and Amara knows it. She is not persuaded. Verne Station, under pressure to build faster and staff its hulls, has floated compressed programs that turn out qualified hands in a fraction of the time. The commons watched, and it declined. The argument here is not that the newer methods teach nothing. It is that they teach the answer without teaching the noticing: the walk of the same corridor at the same hour, the torque logged and logged again, a patience with being bored that never quite curdles into boredom.

"A crash cert gives you someone who can pass the test the machine sets today," said Osei, thirty years on the floor, brought in to walk the new cohort through their first rotation. "It does not give you someone who feels the hum change before it becomes a noise. That is not a fact you can hand over. It gets into the hands over years."

The stakes underneath all this are demographic, and everyone on the floor knows it. The old hands are not aging out the way old hands used to. Longevity therapies reach the reactor commons the same as anywhere, and some of the senior technicians have simply stayed, serving on year after year, which is its own quiet blessing and its own quiet problem, since the ladder does not clear and the young ones wait for a rung that does not open. But the therapies are uneven in who they reach, and the crews are honest with themselves about the arithmetic: a floor cannot run on the same forty pairs of hands forever, and not everyone who trained a generation ago is choosing to remain.

Six weeks of nothing going wrong

To show the cohort what they are training toward, the commons folded the first stretch of instruction into a scheduled maintenance rotation, six weeks of pulling and inspecting components that have given no sign of trouble, precisely because they have given no sign of trouble. The apprentices watched a coolant manifold come apart that had run flawlessly since before most of them were born, watched it go back together, and asked, more than once, why.

"Because the day you wait for the sign is the day you have already lost," Amara told them. She stood beside a diagnostic panel that reported everything nominal, everything green, everything exactly as it should be, and pointed at it the way you point at something you do not entirely trust to speak for itself. The abundance that lets the world desalinate its water and pull carbon from its own air rests on rotations like this one, unseen by design, dull on purpose, a dullness that has quietly become its own kind of proof.

Osei walked the last corridor of the day with three of the new hands trailing behind him, logging torque values that had not changed and would not change, and he did not tell them they were bored, because he knew the machine would eventually tell them what he could not. The hum stayed low and even. The machine remembers who tended it, and that afternoon it was teaching forty people how to be remembered.

A decade is not long enough, frankly. I've seen what happens when you rush certification—you get a technician who doesn't know what a microvolt drop means at fifty megawatts, and then the beam corridor goes dark at dinner time across four regions. Forty apprentices is good. Whether they stay past year three is the real question.

Ten years is the correct interval. The terrestrial fusion commons runs on preventive protocols written when we had no margin for error—every bearing, every seal, every temperature gradient has to be understood not as procedure but as structural reality. Shorten it, and in thirty years you get catastrophic failure modes that nobody alive will trace back to this decision.

My son got trained in the old academies, back when you couldn't cut corners because there weren't enough people and too many things that would kill you if you guessed wrong. These young ones have it easier and they still complain the program takes too long. They didn't have to choose between power and bread.

This is precisely what worked in the recovery itself—patient, repetitive instruction in systems that could not afford to fail. The Commons is not conserving tradition for its own sake; it is repeating the protocol that kept us alive when shortcuts would have meant collapse. We forget these lessons every generation, and we will pay for it again.

A decade to train a technician is a decade that capital sits idle. You could rotate trainees faster, compress the practical modules, bring in simulation work from L5—the bottleneck here is institutional conservatism, not physics. The Accord keeps pricing maintenance labor artificially high and then wonders why there's no incentive to innovate.

Forty apprentices, and I'd wager three-quarters of them will tell you at year five that they'd rather be building orbital infrastructure or trading longevity credits. The maintenance track is where you go if you're patient or stuck, and a program this long bets that institutions will still exist to employ them when they're done. That's a bold wager.

Curious that the Commons can afford a ten-year training track but can't guarantee these forty apprentices will have a livable wage at the end, or that they won't age out of the program if they fall sick and can't access the therapies everyone else takes for granted. The ideal is that skill and patience are rewarded. The practice is that they're exploited until the institution no longer needs them.
